An essential component of many bunches of flowers thanks to their long vase life, which is normally over two weeks, this very pretty Peruvian Lily has lavender flowers with black whiskers and a pale lemon throat. Alstroemerias are excellent for the cutting garden and also deserve a spot in the garden. They are not a bulb, but rather grow from tuberous roots which spread outwards increasing the plant size each year.
Alstroemerias flower for many weeks from early summer until autumn and plants can produce up to eighty flowering stems per year so are extremely popular in our cutting garden as well as with our Flower Farmer friends. They are also a great choice for a pot for those people lacking space. Planted in numbers for visual impact they look particularly striking.
Plant in full sun or dappled shade in well-drained soil and some protection from wind is appreciated. Water regularly and they will thrive. We cover ours with a layer of mulch and they reliably over-winter.
If picking, pull the stems from the base to promote new flowers rather than cutting.
